Paiyaa- a slow indian car ride

Paiyaa-what it means i have no idea, but it sums up... karti what the hell were u thinking for doing this movie, i had such high expectations from you, after parutiveeran and ayirathil oruvan, forget the fact you might have donned the same role...but you din have to dash all my hopes...sheesh! and this was the guy i once thought could teach surya a thing or two bout acting :s

Anyway paiyaa brings back a lot of memories to a person, its like a dish, its substance being ‘Ghilli’ and flavoured with ‘run’ and finally with a dash of ‘sandhakozhi’ and ‘bheema’... can u imagine how it was, the people i went to watch it with were cursing me for even suggesting i wanted to see this.
Anyway lets got to the movie synopsis shall we, not like im gonna spoil anything anyway...

The hero Siva (karti)-for once the hero isn called karthik... who only boards a running bus, is on a job hunt with his pitiful friends who try get everything done for him (if u notice, all these people look like an impostor of some known actor or another) anyway so eventually he sees Charu (tammanah) and its love at first sight for him and misses his interview for her. (were u actually surprised?)

So some how they end up in this situation where she is running away from her marriage that her step mum fixed which she is not interested in and are driving to Bombay to escape from it.(btw they are going to look for her grandma who she’s never seen in her life for the past 20 years) So a group of Andhra tugs are after her. Mean while for some flash back reason some Bombay tugs are after him. So literally when they aren’t driving, they are fighting either group of tugs or dancing to songs.

The songs...man karti looked like a fish out of water.... i wonder why Brindha, Raju Sundram and Sabeena khan couldn do anything bout his dancing. The picturization was a mess, it just totally spoilt the ‘niceness’ on radio... and tamanah was seriously nothing to shout about throughout the whole movie

Here i have to grumble bout the dressing... after spending so much of money, why couldn Priya Manikandan do a little more for their clothes? Tamannah was shouting shreya in one song, and wearing the same three clothes the rest of the way and karti just has tht same shirt on half the movie, its like he does this for almost all his films :s

Oh and before i end my ranting, why is it the Indian thugs look so, i dunno terrible while the Bombay people look so distinguished? I never got that...AND how can they fall in love at the end when it was a one sided thing and there was no i mean NO chemistry between them the WHoLe way (notice all the songs are only male sung)
So in conclusion, besides kanal kannan’s fight and some ok dialogue by Brindha sarathy, plus the new face soniya deepthi and some other...it was a waste of time, and no one can blame me for sleeping off

Verdict : a car ride, just a car ride with nothing else to it...

Goa!

Ok i cant believe people have actually turned to my blog for movie reviews, even shocking i cant believe people are reading my blog and even telling me about it, lol. Thank you very much. I did watch Alive in Wonderland but it was such a disappointment that its gonna take me time to digest before i actually can ramble about it, and yes i intend to watch ‘remember me?’ though i hate twilight oh and the Blind side! *yeay*... wonder how i intend to do all this over work, game, and trying to grad. Aiks!

Be warned this is another language film, and there will be another “Dance Pe Chance’ once i get around to watching it, over the next few days.
Goa, if anyone was not aware is a place in India. (Score 1 if u do ;) a major tourist destination area, oh and drug hub, etc etc, apparently its a real gorgeous place and hopefully i will be landing there at the end of the year, Obviously not important.

Rajinikanth’s animation was supposed to be her first production venture, but for Soundarya Rajinikanth, this turned out to be her first production venture instead. After Saroja, which i enjoyed and Chennai 60028, which i never understood, but both were box office hits, one would have expected this to be the same, but unfortunately for Venkat Prabhu’s holiday, i think it wasn so great, maybe it made the box office but i obviously din bother looking that up :S

With the same young team, Goa is a holiday on its own and easy to determine the target crowd and its surely not a family show. Trust me. Three friends from a village (which i cant remember the name), Jai, Premji and Vaibhav are brats, always breaking the village rules. So in result at the ‘ruling’ under the tree, the three families are forbidden frm speaking to one another. Obviously being them, they break the rules and run away to Madurai together to go see Jai’s friend. When they get there, they see him getting married to a white female whom he met in Goa and was gonna go with her overseas t settle down. Seeing this, these three jokers run away to Goa as well, to seek for the similar life as him. And thats where the rest of the story takes place. Its apparently Goa, but its SO obviously Langkawi and Bangsar, can you imagine. Oh and the popular stage song was at the budaya place...Ish ish anyway...

Premji does a whole role of hilarious stunts, the mentionable ones being, the fact that he’s God’s child from all the olden day movies was a riot. Nextly, he does a fight scene, yes him and with all sorts of background music, especially Vijay’s vettaikaran, was hilarious! Jai being the only one in the group who knows “English” does a great job by speaking broken English...lol and theres this scenece by the beach which he is reading a letter, which i liked the most. Vaibev, who i have not seen before in any movie, claims to be a ladies man, but at the end gets hooked to Sneha, and theres actually a suspense there which was a nice touch.
Oh My God, Aaravind Akash’s bdy was to die for! Such a refreshment from his usual lame roles. Oh by the way he’s gay in the movie wit his partner Sampath. That guy is so good, like he was so gay, if there was an award in anything that would nominate him for ‘best supporting actor’ i think they should and he should so win! But i wonder how the villagers in India took the whole gayness thing. Cause even here on the CD a part has been cut off, like where they confess their ‘love’ for each other. Lol!

Prasanna, Nayantara and Simbhu make appearances, in that order. Pia is ok, nothing to shout bout, and the Melissa i think, she was quite cute in all her scences, especially hwere she speaks tamil, by the way she really does, apparently.
The movie on the whole was some happy go lucky show, nothing too serious or what so ever. Nothing to shout about either, if you bored, wanna see some bikini clad girls and a whole lot of Malaysia and all that, its a decent watch,. But the songs were nice. By Yuvan i think.

Verdict: Fun! And just that!

Up In The Air

I have never utilized a lunch break in a better way. No meeting friends and seeing new clients and just reading a book in a crowded restaurant with the ipod plugged in is good, but today was awesome. Why you ask? I spent the afternoon with George Clooney *drools*. Yes I did go for the show alone; I have come a long way from the 20 people group movie tours that i used to organize. Like how many of you discuss the movie with the person next to you while its running? A) its annoying B0 i like to concentrate, thank you.... so i have picked up this habit of, “if you wanna do, just go do it, who cares what the person next to you thinks oh of course but if its ur boss whose gonna kick u for a 2 hour lunch break, then...)”

Up in the air is an Academy award nominated. It falls under the categories of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting actress for the two leading females in the movie. Ok compared to the ‘hu ha’avatar created this is gonna look like a bird in avatar BUT its good. Its very good and I strongly recommend you watch it.

George Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, who lives by his lectures ‘What’s in you Backpack?’. His motive is convincing you to leave your life behind and carry no burdens of people, things, and properties as such. No he is not a motivational speaker by genre; his job is an employee’s nightmare and a employers saviour. What? He works for a company whom are sent to other companies to fire people on behalf of the chickened employer. And Ryan’s goal in life, to accumulate 10 million air miles and that would make hi the 7th person in the world to do so. So every city he flies to, every car he rents, hotel he stays and food he eats makes him closer to the goal.

Why would someone have such a bizarre goal in life? For one reason, he spends 320 glorious days flying and 43 whole miserable days at home. Most people would find, breathing in recycled oxygen, airline food, getting free cookies and drinks at hotel not very pleasant, I mean the skies rarely provide the welcoming feel anymore but Ryan says that only that makes him feel right at home.

It is amazing how he finds comfort in all the weird parts of an airport. Plus the movie teaches you a few packing tips i.e: how to be a practical packer, to get thru airport screening quickly, and shows you the easy ropes about a small simple hotel.

Anyway by now you might be thinking, the movie s just about him? Well by now i was waiting for a terrorist attack or a bomb blast, but n, it was lady love knocking on the door, Vera Farmiga, who plays Alex. Alex just like Ryan spends a lot of time transmitting at the airport. They both become intertwined in each other that it starts to change his life. Most of the comedy is by the both of them, by the perfect timing and facial expressions, but of course they have some sizzling romantic scenes going on there as well. (on the other hand, they could have avoided the bad double nude body)

On his work side, Ryan has a nemesis, Anna Kendrick who plays Natalie. Graduated on top f her class, she follows her boy and decides to join this company. She comes up with an idea on how you can fire people online, like video Skype or something. This obviously puts Ryans lifetime goal in danger. So for that very reason, he tries to get his boss to reject the idea, but ends up having to take Natalie on his travels to teach her the ropes ofthe job in order to prefect the online firing service.

How the movies flows about with that idea, what happens to Alex and Ryan plus what about Ryans family forms the rest of the movie. If you’re bored of action packed movies that we have been feed for the last few months and would appreciate a wonderful script and great acting. This is one movie you must simply catch. Btw, it was directed by Jason Rietman of Juno and Thank you for not smoking.

VTV (tamil show)

Before i start, yes i have realized my reviews lately have been on language films. so for the record i did watch Valentine’s day last week but have not got around to jotting it down just yet. This movie, seriously need a mention, for the reasons you can read below.

Before anything, Simbu (Silambarasan) I have to say, congratulations your acting skills have improved and you looked very much better here. Trisha you look absolutely gorgeous with or without all that make up piled on. You look exactly like you did at “something Something unnakum ennakum” and some other movies. Gautham Vasudev Menon, hats of for another wonderful story line, And the cameramen which i have forgotten the name, brilliant job done.

Now, creating waves with a good looking cops in more than a movie, moving on to a heart warming dad and son relationship, it was about time Gautham Menon directed a story based on love right? Or people would have told him he’s mad staying in the Tamil industry. Well so he did, and he took his usual 2 years to finish it, went around the world to shoot it as well as promote it, created so much hype for it and he either misplaced the original storyline and photocopied the same script to many times. Dude, seriously!

The story basically (stop reading here if you have not watched it) The hero Karthik (named Young Superstar from the previous little super star)from a Hindu family gets ‘hit by love’ the moment he sees Jessi, the Malayalee-Christian girl who is his house owners daughter. They both hail from the stereotype, 4 some family (dad, mum, bro, sis). He is aspiring to be a film director and she is a program analyst who is a year elder than him. So he goes around to telling her he loves her. So typically she goes off to Kerala for some reason and he goes all the way there just to apologize (like people go all the way to America, whats Kerala right? {vaaranam Aayiram})So the rest of the movie unfolds wif him, constantly waving his hands around like a bird, hitting his chest, swearing, trying to turn it all English, And of course not forgetting our heroine changing her mind about the whole thing every half an hour. sheesh woman, do you have to be SO confusing, its just YES or NO damn it! Gautham must have been jus as confused as her you and I.

Ok now that we are done with the story, can i please babble about everything else. The clowns who are acting in the movie, of this movie, cannot act for nuts, and apparently they are the hero and heroine for the telugu version of the movie, i cant imagine how it’ll be :s . Ganesh who acts as Simbhu’s friend is like the comedian and he’s very good, though i’m not sure if i’ve seen him elsewhere before.

Ok simbhu, though you have improved, must you really just memorize the lines and spit them out, its not an exam! And Trisha you have really done a brilliant job, again. But you should avoid piling up all that makeup, cause in some scenes it just looks way to thick and horrible. Chinmayi did a great job as the dubbing artist for Trisha, but then again, its like listening to Sameera Reddy.aiks! But you must give it to them, the entire movie just lays on the hands of these two people on screen. I mean there is literally no fighting, no i will save the day. No Vijay’s style of i dominate the movie and your just the side dish. Plus the intimate scenes between them are so well taken, that you can feel it and them.

Here you must credit manoj the cinematographer. Started of his career by assisting in various tamil movies, he moved on as cameramen for Eeram and Unnai pol Oruvan, my two all time favourite tamil shows. This guy did a great GREAT job at it, especially at bringing out the scenes on the songs. BUT Anthony who usually does perfect editing, kinda did a sloppy job at the second half.

The Songs, yes the Oscar winning composer has yet again done a splendid job, but what do the people of the movie do it? They kill it. Sigh. Is it gonna kill them if they lip sync to it properly? Look at Jayam ravi it doesn kill him. Ish. And it looks like steps from Vaaranam aayiram all over again. And the “anbil aavan” song made no sense at all. Seriously, it put me off to see those nice songs just killed off like tht. Oh btw if u listen really carefully, in some songs like far away you can hear silent violin and things, The beauty of rahman. Maybe he made the right choice by changing Harris jeyaraj but he still stuck on to his usual song writer Tamarai or something.
The sarees are hot stuff, yes. Nalini Sriram, good job. But more effort could have been put into the western outfits, especially in one of the songs; it was hap-hazardly done.

Don’t take me wrong as critizing everything, because i do know how hard it is to get one of these movies up and running, but for such a big budget film with so much of hype and all the top people in the industry involved, one would expect them to take note of all these minor and minute details to make the movie a whole lot better than it already is.

My conclusion: the show is just not fast moving. Its just like a big fat never ending ‘arasi’ serial. Very the repetatitve. But the first half is awesome, due credit to the lead pair but theres no high point climax.. I would say its a can watch once. For further viewings, i would just wait for it to come on ‘Tangathirai’ in a few months. A lovely first half is spoilt by the boring second half.

So till his next movie Chennaiyil Oru Malaikalam, with half this crew moving on there, i really hope it turns out a lot better.

(this is the longest language review i have ever written...man! u still awake? :P )

"one in a million" -tamil movie

The actual reason i got down to watching this movie was due to all the hype on the idiot box, and i was not disappointed at all. Kudos to the director i must say.
Ayirathil Oruvan meaning one in a million is a movie starting off by stating that the movies about a quest looking for the Raja Cholan dynasty. (i have not got down to totally researching about the whole dynasty so for now let’s pretend that the story is true).

Andrea playing the character of Lavanya as an archaeologist looks so much better in this movie compared to her 1st one. Reema Sen as Anita Pandiarajan has made it back to the movies after a long absence. Karti plays Raguram, like Andrea, in his second movie. But unlike her he’s portraying the same character again. If he continuous to play the same kind of roles i would just be judgemental and decide he can’t act as anything else besides a thug.

The movie starting off on a vogue to look for Lavanya’s father an archaeologist has Anita as the chief of operation, Lavanya to lead the way and Raguram as an assistant. The first half of the story revolves around how they make it to the Cholan destiny, by overcoming the 7 obstacles left by the Cholans when they shifted places so that no one would follow them. These 7 obstacles are: sea, forest rangers, forest warriors (like avatar), snake, sand, hunger, thirst and some village. So Lavanya uses her map, compass and ‘olachudi’ the olden day notes written on leaves and stirs the three of them around these obstacles and gets them to the Cholan dynasty village, to find them all alive.

Here is where the rest of the story takes place on why they were destined to reach there and all. A few noted points which you should look out in the movie, the romance blooming between Lavanya and Raguram is very nicely told in a subtle way.(its hilarious!) Anita’s acting in the second half is applaud able. The three of them have done a real good job along with everyone else. Also R.Partiban as Raja Cholan and depicted his role well making him seem like he was born just to play that. The camera men and lighting dude have brought out the richness in the scenes. Plus they din really have to spend much on wardrobe for the first half ;) it was no wonder why it took 2 years for the movie to be released seeing the amount of editing that had to be done and the care and effort that was put in it.

The part that was really catchy was how the Lord Shiva forms out of the shadows of some stones standing. Very artsy. Also G.V Prakash has proved he comes from the Rahman family. His songs have complimented every scene is such a captivating way.
All in all it’s nice not to see the usual love stories anymore. Hats off to the director, Selvaragavan. And i loved it!

Happy Chinese New year and hope you had a good Valentines :)

3 idiots

“Aal izz well” in order of being removed from the cause of insanity, I went to catch the film just to see what everyone was jumping about to start with. And Boy did it not disappoint. If by the catch phrase you have not figured out what im talking about, people please go and watch ‘3 idiots’ (it is a hindi movie btw). Please do not be fooled by the title of the movie, as silly as it sounds, this is a feel good movie covering all elements and is probably on the way to breaking last year’s ‘Ghajini ‘ movie record.

3 idiots has Aamir Khan (rancho) R.Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena kapoor, Boman Irani and Chatur Vidaya staring in it. The main story line was borrowed from Chetan Bhagat’s book called Five point someone. But as all novels turned into movies, this is just loosely based on it. But unlike many of the films, it’s very hard to actually find fault with the film, seing its excellent story line and even more brilliant acting. The songs by Shantau Moitra, adds the ‘umph!’ to the picture.

The brief storyline is, after 10 years Madhavan, Sharman and Chatur meet up, in order to seek out for a old university friend, Aamir. Rancho as i would prefer to call him, made a huge impact on their lives, telling them to chase their dreams and not do what their parents want to name a few. Also Rancho’s cheekiness

in campus gets them all into trouble with the principal, Boman Irani, who reminds me of his role in Munnabha

i M.B.B.S. However his daughter Kareena develops a soft spot for Rancho. {what’s a Hindi movie without a love story ;) } All in all its an amazingly hilarious story, touches a few senses, and emphasis a lot about the study culture and suicide attempts. Lastly, “Aal Izz Well” is a mantra chanted throughout the movie to tell one that everything’s gonna be ok, you just have to stay calm and believe.

If you haven’t seen it, go watch! (laugh along with the subtitles, so read fast enough)

holmes

Sherlock Holmes a history. Being a fictional character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, he is widely known as a skilful detective. Sir Arthur is an author of 4 novels and 56 short stories which portrays Sherlock Holmes as its main character and his friend Dr. Watson. Some of the stories have been written by the point of view of Dr. Watson, Sherlock Holmes himself and other third parties. I surely hope to find the patience to read these novels which contain a real high level of English which i find tiresome.

The movie itself, now this I can speak about. Being nominated for two Golden Globes and maybe even making its way to the Oscars that certainly says that this movie has made its point, Which lured me to watch it this evening despite the million of things i should have been doing. Terrible me!

The movie released for Christmas 2009, was produced by Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey, Dan Lin. Direction fell under Guy Ritchie, and it was written by Lionel Wigram on the story board, Sir Arthur ( for fictional characters), while Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham, Simon Kinberg wrote dialogues.

The Main casts are

Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes, Jude Law as Dr. John Watson,

Kelly Reily as Mary Mortsan, Eddie Marsan as Inspector Lestrade

Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler Mark Strong as Lord Blackwood

To share with you the plot of story by brief for those who may not have watched the move. It revolves around Holmes and Dr. Watson trying to solve some sort of mystery (obviously). In detail the mystery that involves Lord Blackwood whom they got sentenced to death, lurking back from the tomb and continuing his killing spree by using black magic in order to rule Britain and possibly the world soon after. In this chase to discover how he came out of the tomb alive and what his aim is, gets involved Irene Adler and Inspector Lestrade, one trying to ruin him and one trying to get his help. At the end, Holmes does discover what Lord Blackwood is up too and manages to solve the mystery and gets him hung for real. But in order to lead to a sequel there is a mystery character that was using Irene Adler to find out what Lord Blackwood was up to through Holmes, to which we shall wait and see what happens in Sherlock Holmes 2.

In my own opinion this was a movie to broaden the minds of those who understand cinema, it may not be a fun loving show or something with massive effects like Avatar but it surely has its plus points.

teaches one how to observe a person more, and adds knowledge to ones martial art techniques and other knowledgeable facts, exp: chemicals, drugs etc.

Shows London how it was in the mid eights.

Ritchie was surely born to make this movie.

No one else could have done Lord Blackwood better in my opinion; with the amount of research as such put into his character was amazing.

Though Robert Downey Junior might have easily not been the first choice to play the role, did a splendid job as a half drugged light witted man. Jude law surely showed traces of being a wounded soldier (i think that was the point at least) and i just loved Eddie as Inspector.

In a sentence (my sentence): splendid watch, do catch it of you can.
